What Does Simple Really Mean?
Simple is a popular word in the design world. But, what does it actually mean? What do clients mean when they request simple interfaces? What do users mean when they say they like how simple an app is? I've thought about this idea a lot, and I've concluded that when users or clients describe a product as efficient, they really that it is:
- Clean - There's a lot of white space, it's not crowded, there are minimal icons/images, and the color scheme is pleasant.
- Efficient - Uses can accomplish their goals in just a few clicks, and there aren't long wait times or unnecessary information.
- Intuitive - The user task flows are what the expect, the interface matches their mental model, and AI is easy to navigate.
If you have found yourself struggling with how to please Goldilocks and make your product perfectly simple, examine the details and think critically about your interface and navigation. Is it clean, efficient, and intuitive? Develop these areas and you may just find a design that is just right.
